2009 World Series

Rather than create some notion through words as if I was there - here now to take you through the 2009 World Series (P.B. Cup) Championship series is New York Mets winning GM/Manager Bell...
Chiefs, I thought I would post a summary of what took place during the battle for The PB Cup for those who were not in attendance for some or all of the games.
PREGAME - Gord was heard to utter "Oooohhhhhh Boy" several times during batting practice as his late night on the town the night before was still taking its toll on his stomach & head. Too bad he didn't follow the curfew he had set for his players. A burger, fries & a chocolate shake from Harveys took a bit of the edge off and the series was ready to begin.
GAME 1 (Maholm vs Greinke) - Due to the extreme splits on Maholm's card, the Mets decide to load up their lineup with as many right-handed bats and switch hitters as possible even if it means starting Bengie Molina over the 2009 batting champion and strong armed Joe Mauer. This decision was also made possible due to Greinke's holding abilities (-4 arm). When asked about sitting Mauer, manager Bell made it clear that Joe had no problem with the strategy as he is "all about the team". This decision seemed to pay off as the first 6 batters reached base (including a triple by Bengie) in the bottom of the 1st while pushing 4 runs across the plate before reaching the 2 left handed bats in the order who promply went down 1-2-3 with Greinke grounding out weakly to end the noisy 1st, Mets lead 4-0. Greinke sailed through the first 7 innings facing the minimum # of batters thanks to a couple of timely double plays turned by the stellar Met defense and took a 5-0 lead into the 8th thanks to a Nick Swisher long ball earlier in the 5th. Prince Fielder connected with a no doubter to lead of the 8th but that was all the Cardinals could muster as O'Day and Aardsma closed out the game. Final score, 5-1 as the Mets take game 1. GAME 2 (Haren vs King Felix) - In a match between each team's call out picks for that year a pitcher's duel was in the air. Chone Figgins, who was acquired from the Cardinals before the 2009 season, hits a fastball that Haren left up in the zone in the bottom of the 3rd inning that barely clears the wall in right field. That would prove to be all the Mets would need as King Felix tosses 7 strong, O'Day and Aardsma close out the 8th and 9th respectively and the series is heading to St Louis (Downstairs) with the Mets leading the series 2-0. GAME 3 (Buehrle vs J. Johnson) - The Cardinals are not about to roll over as their manager thinks twice about breaking the curfew this time and is feeling a little better for the start of game 3. He is even seen with a beer in his hand (even though a half sip is all he is able to muster before it gets warm) The Cardinals come out swinging and score 2 in the bottom of the 4th and then tack on another 3 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 5-0 lead as H/R's by Manny and Prince contribute to the first real sign of offensive output in the series by the highly touted Cardinal bats . Bell puts 3 on the board in the top of the 6th including a Dunn H/R to make Gord sweat (or was that the alcohol dripping from his pores?) but that is all the Mets could muster as Bailey pitches the 8th and 9th and the Cardinals take game 3 by a score of 5-3. GAME 4 (Greinke vs Oswalt) - Chone Figgins takes his former teammate deep to lead off the game and the Cardinals respond with 1 in the bottom of the 3rd but the decision to use Oswalt as a reliever for 2 innings in game 1 of the series (Gord was still hammered at the time) looks like a potential managerial mistake as Roy starts to labour in the top of the 4th when the Mets knock him out of the game with a 5 spot and a 6-1 lead. The Mets tack on a few more and take a comanding 9-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th when Greinke also starts to tire and the Cardinals plate 4 to encouage those loyal Cardinal fans who have stayed to cheer on their team but the Mets squash any hopes they had with a couple more runs. Final score 11-5 and the Mets are 1 victory away from taking their 3rd straight title. GAME 5 (King Felix vs Haren) - A do or die game for the Cardinals sees a highly anticipated re-match of the game 2 starters and the expected pitching duel does not disappoint. The Mets take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd but Gord responds with 1 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th and that was all Haren would need as he goes 6 strong and Bailey is lights out in the 8th & 9th. Cardinals take game 5 by a score of 3-1 and the series is heading back to New York for game 6. GAME 6 (Johnson vs Buehrle) - Bell takes the early lead with 2 in the bottom of the 3rd and another run in the 3rd but Gord strikes back with 1 in the 5th and 3 in the 6th. Bell ties it up 4-4 with one in the bottom of the 6th but Gord once again responds with 1 in the 7th to regain the lead 5-4. Mr. Mauer goes deep in the bottom of the 8th to tie it once again and this games looks like it is heading to extra innings. After a few lost opportunities (an ill advised attempt to challenge Bourn's arm in CF with a runner gunned down at the plate) Bell's bullpen is spent with 2 out in the 11th so Baboo/Luke Skywalker(Scott) is called into the game to pitch as the Mets appear to be resigned to saving what they have left for a looming game 7. Scott manages to get the 3rd out to close out the 11th and even manages to tip toe his way through the 12th but Gord finally plates a run in the top of the 13th and holds on to secure a 6-5 victory. GAME 7 (Maholm vs Greinke) - A rematch of the series opening game and with all of the marbles on the table and all of STRATO nation on hand, the final and deciding game of the 2009 World Series is set to begin. Greinke continues his strong showing as Bell scores 1 in the 2nd and Luke Scott takes Maholm deep in the 5th and the Mets are up 3-0. The Cardinals are far from done as they jump on a tiring Greinke in the 8th and score 2 runs to make it a game. With Aardsma not available for game 7 after pitching 2 2/3 innings the previous night, Bell hands the ball to George Sherrill to start the 9th and the Mets fans are on the edge of their seats. Gord manages to get a couple of runners on but after a visit to the mound by the Manager (what did Bell say to George?), Sherrill digs deep and closes it out as the Mets rush the field and celebrate a very improbable 3rd straight world championship.
SERIES NOTES - This was certainly one of the closest and most memorable World Series of late after the Mets swept both the 2007 and 2008 series 4-0. - The Cardinals and the Mets each hit 10 H/R's during the series with the only players hitting more than 1 (2) being Figgins & Fielder. - Zach Greinke was named the series MVP after leading the Mets to the title with victories in games 1, 4 and the deciding game 7.
